Casting can be a difficult skill to learn, especially when you’re standing among a bunch of bushes and trees on the side of a lake. But with a little skill and practice, a person can learn to completely avoid all the traps and spend their fishing time productively.
First, put one of those rubber casting weights on the end of the line, you don’t need hooks for practice. Then, take the hula hoop out into the yard and have your kid practice overhead casts, side casts and underneath casts into the hoop to get the hang of each technique. Once your child has mastered this step it’s time to get out the chairs.
Put some chairs behind your child in various places, a coat rack is also a perfect tool as well. Then have him continue to make casts at the hula hoop, and start keeping score. Finally, get tough, and lay a 2 X 4 on the ground to simulate standing on a dock, rock or other precarious position. As you know, the biggest fish are always in the hardest places to fish. There are hundreds of twists to the game, just keep it safe and fun for all to enjoy, and never leave out the girls, they love fishing just like anyone else.

You can also find plenty of games that teach the sport of fishing that work on consoles like Wii, Xbox, and Playstation, each with its own advantages. The games for Wii can be more realistic if they involve the lifelike fishing pole that allows you to “cast” in your living room.
The games that use a fishing pole controller can usually support up to 4 players that compete in many different “fishing environments.” You can also make them more interesting by having them stand in awkward positions as they cast, like on a rock, board, or other obstacles to add a difficult twist to the game. Let your imagination run wild, just keep it safe.
Learning to fish should be a fun endeavor that your kids enjoy and learn a little bit along the way. Any skills that kids learn are always transferable to other sports and activities that call for muscle control, balance, aim, and concentration. Plus, anything that gets kids up and moving instead of just watching is good for their health and well-being.
